Artist statement

This work is part of a larger body of work involving seven sculptures and seven paintings. First exhibited Ararat Regional Art Gallery the works explore the significance of the trophy and what it means to have achieved something. Each sculpture was constructed from fabric and thread, beginning with a statement about achievement from a friend or family member. As l embroidered and assembled the materials, the work took on more organic forms, completely de-constructing the idea of a trophy.

Perinatal (statement by Alison)

“So many women struggle through this part of pregnancy unacknowledged due to societies expectations of the ‘joy’ of pregnancy. To make it through this, become a parent and cope with everything that comes with that responsibility is huge and rarely acknowledged.”
